CSU, Chico Business Students Attend U.S. Air Force Academy Leadership Symposium

On Feb. 18, Dean Willie Hopkins, College of Business (COB), California State University, Chico, and four business students traveled to the U.S. Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs, Colo., to attend the 16th Annual National Character and Leadership Symposium. The symposium included presentations by speakers including CEOs of renowned nonprofit organizations such as the Make-a-Wish Foundation, decorated military personnel and NASA astronaut Guion Bluford Jr. More than 4,000 U.S. Air Force cadets and 200 visiting college students attended the three-day symposium.

CSU, Chico’s participation in the symposium was sponsored by Lam Research Corporation. Their gift to the COB helped launch the Tomorrow’s Leaders Program, one of several initiatives coordinated through the Center for Values Based Leadership. Established in 2008, Tomorrow’s Leaders provides selected student fellows with the experiences and information they need to fully develop their leadership potential. Tomorrow’s Leaders student fellows Kristin Bittikofer, Derek Minetti, Amber McConnell and Andrew Rapattoni attended the symposium.

“I feel extremely honored to have been able to attend this event,” said McConnell. “The opportunity to listen to some amazing people from our recent history was amazing. It was truly uplifting and inspiring.”

Up ‘til Dawn Eclipses $200,000 Goal for St. Jude Hospital

The fundraising team for Up ‘til Dawn recently learned that their letter-writing efforts have resulted in $200,868 in donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. This places them, once again, in the top money-raising spot for all of the universities across the nation so far this academic year. There is still some time before final numbers are in.

The $200,868 figure is significant to the group that had set a goal of $200,000 for this year. Its previous high was $187,000 in 2007, which was an all-time national high, followed by $183,561 in 2008. The Up ‘til Dawn program at CSU, Chico has raised more than $877,000 since 2001.

Twenty-three hundred students wrote more than 50,000 letters to friends and family members. “We continue to break our own records,” said Larry Bassow, program coordinator for Greek Life and advisor to the program. “More participants, more letters and more money raised each year. Our goal is to maintain this record and to reach $1,000,000.”
