Native Grass Identification Workshop Saturday, March 14

Grasses dominate many California landscapes, yet their identification presents a challenge to beginner and experienced botanists alike. The Friends of the Chico State Herbarium, through the Northern California Natural History Museum, is offering “Introduction to Identifying Northern California Grasses” Saturday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Holt 129.

This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the basics of grass identification, using species likely to be encountered in the northern Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade Mountains and the adjacent Central Valley. It is appropriate for both beginners and those more advanced in their identification skills who want a refresher.

John Dittes, local botanical consultant and expert on Northern California flora, will lead the workshop.

University Art Gallery Presents: The Chinese in 19th Century Chico: a Hidden History, March 11

University Art Gallery Presents:

The Chinese in 19th Century Chico: a Hidden History
Dr. Michele Shover, Professor Emeritus, Political Science Department

Wed., March 11
5pm, Trinity 100 (Humanities Center Gallery)

The city of Chico and the West Coast generally were once populated by thousands of Chinese immigrants. While certain urban areas such as San Francisco have maintained thriving Chinese neighborhoods, much of the rural landscape previously occupied by an active Chinese population is now eerily devoid of their living presence.

By 1882, Chico was a town with a population of 4,000 people. Fully one-fourth of that population - about 1,000 people - was Chinese. Their impact upon Chico’s 19th-century Caucasian families was considerable - they grew much of the local produce, operated hand-laundries, and worked as domestic help. Dr. Shover will discuss this long-hidden history of the Chinese in 19th Century Chico.

This lecture is in conjunction with the University Art Gallery exhibition Face: Contemporary Chinese-American Artists.

A reception will follow the lecture at the University Art Gallery, 111 Taylor Hall.
