Grand-Scale Choral Performance of "The Creation" Presented March 29
University Choir Concert: Haydn’s Creation
Sun., March 29 at 4 p.m.
Laxson Auditorium
The 150-voice CSU, Chico Choral Union presents a masterpiece for your Sunday afternoon enjoyment. Join us as we fill Laxson Auditorum with this marvelously entertaining work, written to a libretto based upon John Milton’s great 17th-century epic poem, Paradise Lost.
The almost childlike cheerfulness of Haydn’s music, its inexhaustible inventiveness, and its perfection of design conceal a considerable inner strength. This fusion of exuberance, classical elegance, and intellectual power caused Haydn’s contemporary, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, to say: “Haydn alone has the secret both of making me smile and of touching my innermost soul.” Featured soloists include Dr. Ying Yeh, Director of CSU, Chico’s Opera Workshop and an internationally renowned opera singer.
Advance Tickets: University Box Office, 898-6333.

Conversations on Diversity, Troops to College, March 25
Student veterans represent a significant but often misunderstood addition to the rich diversity of CSU, Chico. Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans are enrolling at CSU, Chico in increasing numbers. These men and women have different perspectives, needs, and goals than students entering college from high school. The panel will discuss challenges faced by student veterans, difficulties of those injured in combat, and the strengths they bring to a learning environment. The media have told us that many of those who return have experienced brain damage or show the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. There is much more to the story.
Please join us and take this opportunity to meet members of CSU, Chico’s Student Veteran’s Organization. We will be meeting in BMU 210 from 12 - 1 pm on March 25, and snacks will be provided.
For more information, please contact the Office of Diversity at 530-898-4764.

Public Forum: "Language as an Ethic of Justice," March 25
The Center for Applied and Professional Ethics presents a public forum:
“Language as an Ethic of Justice”
Michael J. Coyle, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Department of Political Science, CSU, Chico
Wednesday, March 25, 7:30 p.m.
PAC 134
Professor Coyle will demonstrate how social control is built, maintained, and changed by the labor of moral entrepreneurs in everyday social and criminal justice discourse and by the habits of language they produce. By performing a variety of justice language studies and building a “Language of Justice” critical language theory, Coyle traces the processes that give rise to social meanings around issues of social and criminal justice and track how these meanings become symbolic in the entire discourse about crime and justice in our social life.
Professor Coyle will also discuss how moral entrepreneurs define justice situations and social and criminal justice meanings in everyday life through their work of framing the language used to discuss, interpret, and shift practices and policies in social and criminal justice. Through studies of common justice-language phrasing, such as “innocent victim” or “tough on crime,” Professor Coyle argues that modern discourse reflects a denial of the radical constructed character of social and criminal justice ideas and practices.
