January Trip to Galapagos Islands

The College of Humanities and Fine Arts is offering a trip to the Galapagos Islands and Quito, Ecuador, from Jan. 4 through 14, 2008. The faculty-in-residence is Andrew Flescher, professor of religious studies. Students can earn 1-3 credits. Flescher has traveled extensively in Brazil and spent a summer studying wildlife in the Amazon River Basin.

The Galapagos Islands represent one of the few locations left in which nature is pristine. The islands are known for the wide array of animals found there, including Darwin’s finches, great lizards and the largest tortoises in the world.

“My interest in wildlife was awakened in the summer of 2000 when I visited the Amazon River Basin,” said Flescher. “I fell in love with a verdant world populated by both tranquil and ferocious creatures.”

The tour will include six nights in Quito and four nights on a cruise ship. In Quito, there will be a tour of Quito San Francisco Monastery and an excursion to the equatorial line. There will be a four-day Galapagos cruise to Bartolome, Fernandina, Isabela, James, Rabida and Santa Cruz islands.

If you would like more information on this trip, please contact Thomasin Saxe, group coordinator, at tsaxe@csuchico.edu or 530-898-4642.

Astro-bright Papers are not Recyclable - Please Use Pastels

Astrobright or fluorescent papers are not recyclable. These dark or super-bright papers are made with “beater dyes”, so named because they beat the dye into the fiber of the paper to get a dark or fluorescent color. Because there is so much dye in the fiber, it is not possible to remove all the color from the paper in the recycling process. Brightly dyed papers mixed into a load of recyclable paper will contaminate the load. Here at CSU, Chico, all paper is sorted and astrobright papers are removed and thrown in the trash. Please help us reduce the use of non-recyclable paper by choosing pastels for your flyers and brochures.
