M.E.Ch.A. Annual Christmas Program, Dec. 6

On Dec. 6, 2008 M.E.Ch.A. will be having it’s annual Christmas Program that has been going on for 30 years. CSU, Chico M.E.Ch.A. specifically targets low-income families in Hamilton City. We have also since expanded to the Chapmantown area of Chico.

The Christmas program is an annual tradition in which CSU, Chico volunteers head out to Hamilton City and pass out “goody bags” to children. A typical “goody bag,” will contain items like basic school supplies, coloring books, small toys, travel size hygiene products, and health and safety literature targeted for children. On that day we receive help from the Hamilton City Fire Department who provide us with a fire engine that leads us through the streets of Hamilton City. The volunteers follow behind the fire engine, handing out “goody bags,” to the children.

So please help spread some Christmas cheer, by donating anything from small toys, plastic bags, small hygiene products, school supplies or anything else that can placed into this years “goody bags.” Your help will be appreciated and will help bring joy to many families this Christmas. Thank you for your time and help.

Fundraiser and Book Drive, Dec. 1

The County Jail Law Project (CJLP) and the Community Legal Information Center (CLIC) would like to invite you to a fundraiser and book drive on Mon., Dec. 1 from 12pm to 3pm in the Free Speech Area or the BMU, depending on the weather.

We will be setting up a mock jail and “locking up” interns of the County Jail Law Project as well as faculty members from the Political Science Department. The participants must “make bail” from students and members of the community in order to get out of jail. The money raised will benefit the Community Legal Information Center. All the books donated will go to the Butte County Jail. The books must be soft cover, and it would be better if the books had educational value. If you are interested in participating feel free to contact us at CLIC 530 898-4354.

Announcing: Sustainability Summits, I, II, III

This semester we will hold three facilitated discussions about the following list of topics. Not every topic would be covered on any given date. Each conversation will be facilitated by a different person, depending on the topics. The purpose of the summits is to assess campus progress toward sustainability, compare ourselves to other “green” campuses, and determine the actions we will take to achieve our goals.

• What does it mean to be a “green” campus?
• How do we compare to other institutions within the CSU?
• How do we compare to other campuses in the U.S. that have received recognition for being “green”?
• What have we achieved to date and what are our commitments as a campus under the Presidents Climate Agreement?
• Are there gaps in terms of our own achievements, compared to others?
• How do we continue to create a culture of sustainability on campus?
• How can and should we continue to integrate sustainability into the curriculum?

Let us know which topics you feel deserve the greatest attention, and if there are others you would like to see added to the list, please send them to Scott G. McNall at the Institute for Sustainable Development. We hope that students, faculty, staff and community members and partners will join together in deepening the conversation about a sustainable future.
