College of Business’ SIFE Program Receives Grant from Target
California State University, Chico has received a $5,000 grant from Target in recognition of its efforts in volunteerism through SIFE - Students in Free Enterprise. This grant will be used for SIFE’s Wise Kid/Healthy Kid program, in which SIFE helps 4th, 5th and 6th graders learn entrepreneurial skills.
Each semester SIFE invites the elementary school children to campus for four Saturdays to teach them the basics of business. This fall there are approximately 70 youngsters in the program.
During the program the students are shown how to develop a product, create a business and marketing plan, then create their product and sell it at the Chico Farmers Market. Each student is given $10 from SIFE for their start-up capital. On a Saturday following the program, the students sell their products.
