Two bluegrass performing in Laxson Auditorium in one night!
Join Chico Performances as they bring Laurie Lewis & Tom Rozum AND Rani Arbo and her group daisy mayhem to the stage at Laxson Auditorium for a night of folk and bluegrass that will be sure to have you dancing in the isles, March 26 at 7:30 p.m.
Fiddler and bluegrass artist (twice named IBMA’s female vocalist of the year) Laurie Lewis is a Grammy award-winning musician who uses traditional bluegrass instruments to create a new sound — a little bit country, a little bit jazz, a little bit folk. Joined by band mate Tom Rozum on mandolin, guitar, and vocals, Lewis will create an evening of acoustic nirvana. In a double bill for the evening, Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem will perform their signature style of acoustic string swing full of bluegrass and Americana roots music.

Student Job Opening
The Student Learning Center is now accepting applications for Student Program Assistant for Fall 2009. The program assistants work approximately 10 hours per week and provide clerical support for the Student Learning Center, including reception, typing, filing, record keeping, and scheduling of tutors using a specialized computer program. Applicants must type at a corrected rate of 40 wpm and have some computer experience. Starting pay is $8.85 per hour and work-study is required. Start date will be on or around August 17, with possibility of some training in May.
Application review will begin April 21 and interviews will be conducted until the position is filled. For more information or an application please come by the Student Learning Center, located in the new Student Services Center, Room 340.

Experience the pulse pounding sounds of drumming as the San Jose Taiko group brings amazing percussion to Laxson on April 2, 2009 at 7:30 p.m., courtesy of Chico Performances.
For 30 years, San Jose Taiko has mesmerized audiences with the powerful, spellbinding, and propulsive sounds of the taiko drums. San Jose Taiko’s style joins the traditional rhythms of Japanese drumming with the beat of world rhythms including African, Balinese, Brazilian, Latin, and jazz percussion. The resulting sounds are contemporary, exciting, new, and innovative. In addition to exciting, high-energy performances, the program includes explanations of the history and philosophy of the art form, as well as student participation on the drums.

Free-Re-Cycle in April! Do your spring cleaning!
Net Impact will be hosting a freecycle type event open for all students, faculty and staff. Do your spring cleaning and bring anything that you don’t want that is clean and in useable condition to the Free Speech Area on Wednesday, April 1st, 15th and 29th. We will accept any clothes, books, supplies, tools, household & kitchen items, etc. Just drop them off and browse other items for things you need. EVERTYTHING IS FREE! Give what you can, take what you want. However, we will have an area of items that are for sale, and we will sell your items for you for a small fee.
Avoid the landfill! Let others reuse your old belongings, what’s old to you is new to someone else! Any leftover items will be donated to local charities.

Graduate Equity Fellowship
Graduate Equity Fellowship for Under-Served Groups
The goal of the Graduate Equity Fellowship Program (GEFP) is to prepare, motivate, encourage and support those graduate students who aspire to obtain a doctorate and pursue an academic career in teaching and research. Awards for an academic year total $5,500. The two-part program provides a stipend of $750/semester and a salary of $2,000/semester for research related activities under the direction of a faculty mentor.
To be eligible, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
You must be economically disadvantaged; come from an educationally disadvantaged background/experienced restricted access to quality educational opportunities; be admitted to the University and a master’s degree program; classified as a California resident; and there must be a probable need for faculty in your academic discipline - i.e., a projected shortfall in the supply of qualified faculty in your field of study.
Deadline: April 1 for Fall
November 1 for Spring

Kevin Prufer has won three Pushcart Prizes and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. His latest book, National Anthem, is a stunning meditation on the decline of the American empire and was chosen by Publishers Weekly as one of the five best poetry books of 2008.
Troy Jollimore, director of the Humanities Center and professor in Philosophy, is the author of Tom Thomson in Purgatory, which won the 2006 National Book Critics Circle Award in poetry, and The Solipsist, a chapbook from Bear Star Press.

Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve Spring Hikes
Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve (BCCER) is scheduled to host a series of natural history hikes every weekend from March 28th through May 3rd 2009. Folks from BCCER will lead group trips on an exploration of Big Chico Creek Canyon. Come and enjoy the spring weather, move through blooming flowers and creek side riffles as you experience an educational visit to Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve. Hikes will vary in difficulty, allowing an opportunity for everyone!
Difficult hikes. 3/28, 4/19. Meet at 9 AM (All Day Trip)
Moderate hikes. 4/11, 5/3. 10AM-2PM
Easy hikes. 4/5, 4/26. 10 AM - 2PM
All hikes meet at the Highway 99 Park and Ride, and carpool 10 miles east to BCCER. Everyone should wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring a sack lunch to enjoy along the hike. Trips are rain or shine, so come prepared!
Trips are free to the public, but charitable donations are gladly accepted.
