Chico Performances Welcomes Author Doug Lansky, April 14

Chico Performances presents Doug Lansky, adventurer, award-winning author, and world travel expert, coming to Laxson Auditorium on Tues., April 14, 2009.

This fast-paced, visual performance is like stand-up comedy, as well as being informative, inspirational, and funny. Lansky inspires folks to catch the travel bug and avoid the pitfalls on the road less traveled, and to adopt a mindset that can be applied to enriching your journey — wherever you go … and with a minimal environmental impact.

Student Research Grants - Deadline March 31

Student Research Grants

The mission of the CSU, Chico Research Foundation’s Ecological Reserve System is to preserve critical habitat and to provide a natural area for environmental research and education.

Program Description: The goal of the student research grant program is to promote undergraduate and graduate students research projects on the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve & Butte Creek Ecological Preserve. Awards up to $3,000 will assist students with equipment, transportation, printing, and other expenses directly related to the project.

Selection Criteria: All CSU, Chico graduate and undergraduate students that have faculty support will be eligible. Research projects that assist with the mission of the Ecological Reserves are encouraged but all applications will be considered.

Miss President: A Discussion on Women and Politics, April 29

This event is an open discussion on the subject of “Women and Politics,” gender equality, and representation. This discussion will center around questions of the need for supplemental courses like “Women and Politics” and programs like the “Women’s Center.” We’ll also discuss the different approaches taken in the pursuit of gender equality and what the best form of representation of “women issues” is?

Please join us in discussion and the sharing of ideas and perspectives. This is an open discussion intended to increase gender awareness and respect.

CSU, Chico Warehouse Live Auction

The Office of Property Management at California State University, Chico, would like to invite you to our surplus property auction. Items include floor lamps, sofas, lounge chairs, lockers, desks, filing cabinets, bookshelves, chairs, tables, and much much more.

These items are cash only and payable at the time of purchase. Viewing hours are 11am to 12noon. The auction will begin promptly at 12:10pm on Tues., May 19, 2009, located at the Warehouse, 810 Oak Street, Suite 100, Chico. Be early as the auction moves fast.

At the time of purchase, you must provide a vehicle to take all items selected by 3pm. Items will not be held for later removal.

Film: "Ever Again," April 1

The documentary film Ever Again, narrated by Kevin Costner, will be presented by Rabbi Aron Hier of the Simon Wiesenthal Center on April 1 at 8pm in Ayres 120.

Ever Again examines the resurgence of violent anti-Semitism in Europe and its connection to international terrorism currently threatening the entire world. For information, contact Prof. Leitner at 898-6774.

Students who have read Three Cups of Tea are asking for spare change donations to collection containers they have placed on campus. Donations will help Book in Common author Greg Mortenson build a school in Pakistan. To date, the following offices have agreed to provide space in their reception areas for donations. Locals with Ties to Pakistan and Afghanistan to Speak About "Three Cups of Tea," April 6

There will be a Three Cups of Tea lecture and discussion event on Mon., April 6 beginning at 7:30pm in Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall (PAC 134).

Three local Butte County people who have ties to Afghanistan and Pakistan will discuss Three Cups of Tea and answer your questions about the book, the cultures, and life in those countries.

Featured speakers:

Aziza Syed-Calandrella, a Chicoan who was born in Pakistan, moved to USA at the age of 11.

Maria Shahid teaches Spanish at Butte Community College and has visited Pakistan many times with her husband Shahid Iqbal.

Nahid Chopan, a native of Afghanistan came to the U.S. after her home country was invaded by the Soviets in 1980.

Free and open to the public.

Three Cups of Tea is the community Book in Common for 2009. The book, written by Greg Mortenson, tells the true story of how a failed attempt at climbing at mountain led to the building of schools in desolate parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Guitarist Tobin Roye to Perform with CSU, Chico Guitar Students, April 10

Classical guitarist Tobin Roye will perform with members of CSU, Chico’s Classical Guitar Ensemble in their first annual featured concert “Spanish Master’s: Past and Present.”

The program will highlight works by 17th century guitarist Gaspar Sanz, and 20th century composer, Federico Moreno Torroba. Top students in guitar performance will play solos, duos, trios, and quartets of Spanish flavored music, concluding with a spectacular finale by the full 14 member guitar ensemble.

The concert takes place at CSU,Chico, Friday, April 10 at 7:30pm in Rowland Taylor Recital Hall, located in the Performing Arts Center.

Jazz Sax Great Dave Pietro to Join CSU, Chico's Jazz X-Press , April 9

To accommodate the hectic schedule of special guest artist Dave Pietro, CSU, Chico’s Jazz X-Press had to move its Fooling Around in April concert five days later than previously advertised to April 9.

Anyone who goes to Fooling Around in April —- Thurs., April 9 at 7:30pm in Harlen Adams Theatre - and hears Pietro’s masterful playing of the saxophone will be glad for the date change.

An internationally renowned talent, Pietro has played jazz in more than 30 countries, recorded six CDs of his own music, and performed onstage with the likes of Liza Minelli, Paul Anka, Blood Sweat & Tears, Ray Charles, Louis Bellson, Harry Connick Jr., Rosemary Clooney, and John Pizzarelli.

Pietro will perform a variety of works with the Jazz X-Press during the concert, noted Rocky Winslow, head of jazz studies at CSU, Chico.

“We’ll be doing everything from straight ahead sounds of Count Basie, Kenton, and Buddy Rich to the progressive sounds of big band jazz today, including our very own student originals,” noted Winslow.

While at CSU, Chico, Pietro will also hold clinics and workshops for the student musicians.

Also joining the Jazz X-Press and Pietro for the concert will be the Red Bluff High School Jazz Band under the direction of Tod Filpula.

Leadership and Success Conference, April 29

A variety of successful local business owners, community leaders, and respected academics will share their experiences in world of leadership and their journey to success. This day-long conference is an opportunity for CSU, Chico students to learn, listen, engage, and discuss insights to student leadership. Through workshops, panels, and energizing discussion groups, our goal is to equip you with knowledge, inspiration and motivation to maximize your potential and lead successfully.

To participate, come by the Cross-Cultural Leadership Center and pick-up an application (Meriam Library 172, across from the BMU Marketplace)! Submit the completed application form and conference fee to the Cross-Cultural Leadership Center by Monday, April 20.

Enjoy the San Jose Taiko Drummers, April 2

Experience the pulse pounding sounds of drumming as the San Jose Taiko group brings amazing percussion to Laxson on April 2, 2009 at 7:30pm, courtesy of Chico Performances.

For 30 years, San Jose Taiko has mesmerized audiences with the powerful, spellbinding, and propulsive sounds of the taiko drums. San Jose Taiko’s style joins the traditional rhythms of Japanese drumming with the beat of world rhythms including African, Balinese, Brazilian, Latin, and jazz percussion. The resulting sounds are contemporary, exciting, new, and innovative. In addition to exciting, high-energy performances, the program includes explanations of the history and philosophy of the art form, as well as student participation on the drums.

Tickets are: $23 Premium, $18 adults, $16 senior and $14 student/child and are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333.
