Campus Notice: Death of Elagrace Reekie, Professor Emerita, Nursing
Elagrace Reekie, 80, retired administrator from the School of Nursing, passed away on Aug. 13 after a brief illness. She was born Jan. 10, 1929. She had lived in Magalia since the time of her retirement.
Reekie received her doctorate from the University of Washington in 1970. Prior to her teaching career, she was a public health nurse in Seattle. She taught at Jamestown College, the University of Washington, and Deaconess Hospital before coming to Chico.
She came to Chico State in 1971 as the associate dean of Nursing and retired in 1999.
Reekie was an expert in nursing accreditation and consulted with nursing programs to help them achieve national accreditation (these included Minot State and Jamestown College in North Dakota and Southern Oregon State in Ashland). In 1975, she developed an external degree program for registered nurses to attain their Bachelor degrees at Chico State, offering courses on the Shasta and Yuba College campuses. This program eventually evolved into the current online degree program.
Reekie was the coordinator for the School of Nursing master’s program in the 1970s, and mentored many students through their master’s theses. For many years, she taught public health nursing, nursing research, and strategies for working with developmentally disabled children.
“Elagrace was a visionary, always looking at innovations in nursing,” said Sherry Fox, director of the School of Nursing. “She always presented a positive perspective in dealing with problems.”
The flag on Kendall Hall Lawn will be lowered tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 21 in her honor.

Nigeria Wins SAGE Global Entrepreneurship Competition in Brazil
For the third straight year, a Nigerian school team has won the Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE) World Cup tournament, held Aug. 9-2 in Brasilia, Brazil.
SAGE was founded by California State University, Chico business professor Curt DeBerg in 2006. He and seven College of Business students organized this year’s tournament, which included student national champion teams from 14 high schools representing 10 countries.
The two U.S. teams, from Holy Angels Academy in Buffalo, N.Y., and Benicia High School from Benicia, earned the right to represent the United States by placing first and second, respectively, at the SAGE USA national tournament in San Francisco in May. In the World Cup tournament, the Holy Angels Academy team finished third behind the first- and second-place teams, both from Nigeria.
